'Beatty Buck' Breaks New Records

Hunting- Xenia, Ohio native Mike Beatty was recently awarded the Ishi Award by the Pope and Young Club. The Ishi award is given out by the Pope and Young Club for what they consider to be a truly outstanding big game animal taken in North America. The award has only been given out 16 times in the award’s 45 year history and once it is given it cannot be given again for two years.

Beatty’s white-tailed deer was chosen over four other contenders; an Alaskan brown bear, grizzly bear, mountain caribou, and a non-typical American elk, for the coveted Ishi award. All animals under consideration for the awards had to be taken with a bow and arrow. Beatty received three awards: Best in Class, World Record, and the Ishi.

On November 8, 2001, Mike Beatty took the enormous buck with the non-typical rack while out archery hunting in Greene County. The deer with the huge twisting, curled, and gnarled rack soon became known as the 'Beatty Buck.' The deer initially scored at 304 6/8.The previous award for a whitetail was a world record in 1962 and it measured 279 7/8. The Beatty buck measured 294 0/8.

The Ishi award is named after a Native American named Ishi who was the last known Native American tribesman. He came out of the wilderness in 1911 and was considered to be a primitive man and was brought to the University of California for study. Dr. Saxton Pope and later Art Young were the two researchers in charge of the project. Ishi soon taught the two men how to hunt with a bow and arrow which in turn rekindled America’s interest in archery.
