Garmin Etrex GPS
GPS Manufacturer: Garmin Garmin Model: Etrex Review Category: GPS
Purchase: GPS I picked this up at a Circuit City and paid about 100 dollars for it. As I was contemplating hunting on unfamiliar public lands, I needed something to keep me from getting lost while hunting some of these large tracts.
Things I like about the Garmin Etrex GPS: Unlike units of the past, these new GPS units for hunters are very easy to use. The hunter appears on the screen along with the waypoints you input. You know where you are! It doesn't get any easier than this.
What I don't like about the Garmin Etrex: As this is the entry level unit, you won't get fancy color screens or topographical graphics. The unit's small screen sometimes makes it difficult to get the perspective that you want just right. I also found the accuracy to be a little lacking. I put my house in as a waypoint, went for a walk, followed the GPS back, and it had me walking into the neighbor's house across the street. So, it won't pinpoint your deerstand for you, but if you generally know where you want to go, it will generally put you in the right area.
GPS Etrex quality: Great yellow color matches my four wheeler. That seems to be the popular color right now. They also over this unit in camo, but it is slightly more expensive.
Etrex summary: For great peace of mind while hunting in unfamiliar woods, or in familiar woods when it is too dark to see, you need a GPS. The Garmin eTrex is easy to use and affordable.
