Slick Trick Slick Trick Magnum Broadhead 125gr 1 1/8" Broadheads

Broadheads Manufacturer: Slick Trick
Slick Trick Model: Slick Trick Magnum Broadhead 125gr 1 1/8"
Review Category: Broadheads

Purchase: Broadheads Purchased online for $25. I bought them because I'm a paraplegic and I shoot a 300+fps crossbow. I wanted a broadhead that would maintain velocity on a short crossbow arrow. I also wanted to find a broadhead that would penetrate bone and leave a good blood trail. I thought I had a good combination blade with these Slick Trick's.

Things I like about the Slick Trick Slick Trick Magnum Broadhead 125gr 1 1/8" Broadheads: They fly great, just like a field tip. They don't "plane out" or drop at all. They hit right where you aim 'em.

What I don't like about the Slick Trick Slick Trick Magnum Broadhead 125gr 1 1/8" : They don't leave ANY sort of a blood trail. I've shot 2 deer with them. One was a good lung shot on a nice 5pt. One was a liver shot, a complete pass through that dropped the big doe immediately but she got up, fell again, then got up again and trotted off. We lost the blood trail after only a short distance on BOTH deer. The 5pt was bleeding heavily and it was thick, frothy lung blood even though it didn't start leaving a visible blood trail until it went about 50yrds. To be fair though, it wasn't a pass through shot. It hit the inside of the opposite side shoulder. Both blood trails diminished VERY quickly even though they started out heavy. They just don't leave a large enough wound channel, even with the largest blade that Slick Trick makes, which is the 1 1/8" blades. It doesn't matter how well a blade flies if it doesn't leave a wound channel large enough that will avoid clotting up. Also, they aren't very sharp out of the box. I've switched to Rage mechanicals, which I've been avoiding mechanicals forever because of the possibility of malfunctions. I've weighed that possibility against the poor results of the Slick Trick's and the fact that I'm not going to be the one doing the actual tracking of my deer for the rest of my life so I want a blood trail that Stevie Wonder could follow and I just have to try something else. I've heard that the Rage blades leave ghastly blood trails, which I hope is true.

Broadheads Slick Trick Magnum Broadhead 125gr 1 1/8" quality: They are VERY durable blades. I had a deer 'jump the string' and I grazed the belly. It stuck in a tree but the blade wasn't damaged at all, and I shoot a 300+fps Tenpoint crossbow so it is a durable blade.

Slick Trick Magnum Broadhead 125gr 1 1/8" summary: I'm a paraplegic and I shoot a crossbow now and I just don't have the faith in these broadheads anymore. I bought them because I didn't want to take the chance that I couldn't penetrate bone and these seemed to be durable, which they are. Also, these blades fly great but if they don't leave a large enough wound channel to leave a decent blood trail. They do pack an initial punch though. It's the only broadhead that I've ever seen knock a deer down on impact. She dropped and kicked herself around in 6 circles but then got up and ran a few yards before her hind quarters hit the ground again and then she got up and ran off. This blade, overall isn't bad, but if it can't bring down a deer it doesn't matter how good every other aspect is. The dullness of the blades out of the package bothered me too. The blades must be sharpened before using them. I'll never use these blades again. I'm switching to Rage and then I'll rate them.....hopefully I can say that I've dropped a huge Pope & Young class deer. We'll see after the fall of '09. I hope my rating helped you choose your next broadhead. I HATE to wound deer. It makes me sick and I mean, literally. I get a physically sick feeling in my stomach. Before I started using these Slick Trick's I'd only wounded one other deer in my life and that was my fault, a poorly placed shot and then suddenly, I wounded two deer in one season. To answer other questions you may have and try and stop the "well, maybe you did this" or "maybe you didn't do that" stuff. I tried for 2 days to find BOTH of those deer, had 5 experienced deer hunters tracking, and I had Luminocks on both arrows and watched exactly where each one hit, the 5pt was hit directly behind the shoulder and I heard it hit the inside of the opposite shoulder. I watched the arrow hit the doe slightly back of where it should have, but by the look of the bright red blood and where I saw it hit, it was a liver shot so I gave her a good 2hrs before tracking her. A liver shot is a fatal shot but it just takes a little longer. By the way she hit the ground twice I figured she wouldn't go far but once I realized she'd gone farther than I thought she should have I waited until the next morning to start again. We lost the blood trail but picked up a slight trickle again about 200yrds away from where we lost it, but it only went for a few yards and stopped again. I just can't justify trying another season with a broadhead that I don't trust. Even if it was my fault, which it wasn't, but if I don't trust my equipment then I won't use it. I feel like trusting your equipment leaves one less thing to chance and "trust" is important because it's one less thing to think about as you pull up to aim. A clear head leaves room so you can think about the shot placement.
