Lyman Mustang rifle Black Powder
Black Powder Manufacturer: Lyman Lyman Model: Mustang rifle Review Category: Black Powder
Purchase: Black Powder I have been hunting with black powder since the early 80's mostly with side lock percussion rifles with a great deal of success but lately the weather during our Maine season has turned wet. So I purchased a inline break action Lyman Mustang rifle from Mid south shooters supply for $279 with a free case before shipping.
Things I like about the Lyman Mustang rifle Black Powder: I like the appearance of this firearm the tight lock up of the break action hammer-less design and the top tang safety. I mounted a Simmons pro-diamond 4x scope on the supplied Weaver bases then within 5 shots my load of three 50 grain Triple Seven Powder pellets pushing a CVA powerbelt 245 grain bullet in front of a 777 209 primer I was seeing touching 3 shot rested groups at 25 yards. When I backed off to 100 yards my rested groups were still inside 3 inches. Due in part to the 8 lb+ weight and excellent recoil pad the felt recoil was very mild even with this max load.
What I don't like about the Lyman Mustang rifle: The only complaints I have were the trigger felt like it was a two stage trigger with the first stage being rough and the second stage crip and light with no over-travel, and the lack of a wench for breach plug removal could be improved.
Black Powder Mustang rifle quality: I loved the look of the stock and metal finish. The metal to wood fit was as it should be. The lock up was very tight and even a little hard to open when I first got this fine weapon. The Williams fiber-optic open sights appeared to be of good quality.
Mustang rifle summary: As Ive said before the looks and feel of this rifle would make you feel it cost a great deal more. The tight groups I was able to get with a simple hard hitting hunting load assured me that this was a quality firearm. The ease of cleaning after the shooting just added to my respect for this black powder gun. Overall I truly loved this muzzle loader it will be a constant companion in the deer woods this muzzle-loading season.
