Garman GPS III+ GPS
GPS Manufacturer: Garman Garman Model: GPS III+ Review Category: GPS
Purchase: GPS I purchased this unit about 3 years ago from a local Walmart. My father purchased his first and shared many stories on how he used his. I paid about 360.00 new. I was on vacation up in Maine and was extremely unfamiliar with the area. What a time saver it turned out to be.
Things I like about the Garman GPS III+ GPS: 1. Ease of operation. I had the unit opened before I made it back to the car in the parking lot. After reading the quick reference instructions included, I was off and tracking my position. I marked several waypoints at places I needed to return to very easily.
2. The default map is pretty good, marking all main roads. I also purchased the additional software to upgrade the maps. I was truly amazed how detailed these maps were. Roads matched up very well. Using additional mapping software along with the GPS and laptop, I was able to locate address information I recieved from Realtor as I searched for places to purchase. Some realtors were able to give me coordinates which allowed me to find the houses without the laptop. Although, the 15" laptop screen really makes ease of viewing while we drove.
3. World map. Though road ways are not depicted on the map outside of U.S., I have used my GPS in Iceland and Cuba. If you turn on the track, you can mark the roadways as you drive. I dont know how anyone could get lost using this unit.
4. I like to fish alot and have found that using the GPS will always put your boat back on the honey holes.
5. Data Collection. This unit will collect travel information as long as you leave it on. I found it fun to drive across the U.S. and track my average speeds. This can get you in trouble if you are trying to set records for braggin rights. Dont tell a Police officer you were trying to keep your average speed up. He just may act interested and want to see what your talking about. You will be pretty excited to show off your new toy. This in return may change the outcome of your citation. Not for the better either.
5. Elevation. I took my unit on a flight and decided to check it out while airborne. Ever wonder how fast the airplane is traveling? How about how High you are in the sky? I was able to compair the data with the pilot, and my unit was about 500 feet off at 27,000. Planes use altimeter settings above 18,000 feet so I am willing to bet the GPS was accurate as for AGL readings. Almost forgot, if you drive after flying reset the average speed. 500 mph for 6 hours can really make bump up your averages. LOL
6. Added fetures include roadside services also. Great tool when you are in unfamiliar places. Want to find nearest walmart or services available at the next interstate exit. No problem.
7. GPS is a real treat, and I think everyone should get one just to keep up with the times. I just recently purchased a GPS / Sonar unit for the boat. I will be happy to write about that when I get it installed. Type, Humminbird Matrix 97.
What I don't like about the Garman GPS III+: While on the water, the maps do not always line up. It states do not use as a sole source of navigation. This is very important when operating on water. Roads line up really nice, but the shoreline does not.
GPS GPS III+ quality: Unit is built really nice. I have used it on the ATVs, boat, and cars. It has found its way in muddy and salt water many a times. Dropped 3 feet on the floor boards of the boat and still kept on tracking. All the rubber buttons are still in new condition. Well, the labels are a little worn. But believe me it took some time and alot of button pushing to do this.
GPS III+ summary: Great toy to have. Will get you where you need to go every time. My wife never has to tell me to pull over and ask for directions any more. This is a major plus.
Greatly enhances hunting and fishing trips.
