Garmin Etrex GPS
GPS Manufacturer: Garmin Garmin Model: Etrex Review Category: GPS
Purchase: I purchased my Garmin Etrex through Cabela's for $99.99 plus $8.95 Shipping and handling. I purchased it after I was tracking a deer for a friend and lost my way. I eventually found the deer and the way out, but I vowed never to be in that situation ever again.
Things I like about the Garmin Etrex: I really enjoy the ease of using the Garmin Etrex. The directions are simple and I even purchased my 15 year old one and he loves it. If you find you have a hard time following directions you can purchase a video tape demonstrating each feature for $14.99. It was well worth every penny. Another feature I liked about my etrex was the price, it is affordable to everyone. It is also very compact, it can easily be slid into a hunter's fanny pack or you could purchase a pouch that clips to your belt for $9.99. Another great feature is that it is waterproof, this helps when hunting in foul weather in which Maine is well known for. I have used my Etrex from temperatures of 103F to -23F and it performed beautifully. There is also a back lit screen when in low light conditions, I have found this feature very handy. I really enjoy the sunrise and sunset feature on my unit. This keeps me honest for legal shooting times
What I don't like about the Garmin Etrex: If I could change anything on my Etrex it would have to be the function of storing names of landmarks. I have found that I need more letters than that is offered. You can store a name up to six digits and I feel it should have more. I also find the my etrex really likes to eat up batteries. I always keep a spare set in my fanny pack just in case. The thing I dislike most about my Etrex is that in order for it to function properly, you must be walking. For instance, you are looking for the way back to your truck and you start walking and it states that you need to walk North/East. If you sit down to take a break, the unit will still say your truck is in the north/east but the pointer may be in a different direction. This caused me grief the first time I used it. The best way to avoid getting mixed up is to carry a compass. When the unit states that your truck is north/east just go north/east on your compass and you will be fine
Etrex quality: The etrex is a very rugged unit, it is waterproof and bright yellow so I don't lose it. You can purchase one in Camo color for an extra $10.00. The batteries go in and out very easily with a twist of a small ring (no tools required)
Etrex summary: The bottom line is if you want an affordable waterproof unit that helps you return home safely then the etrex is your unit. My recomendation to anyone who buys an etrex, you MUST practice in an enviroment that you are comfortable in and an enviroment that you know your way out. This way you can become familiar with the unit and all its features. Don't go out without knowing your etrex.
