Hunting Gear - Z-MEDICA BEGINS MARKETING ITS NEW QUIKCLOT® TRAUMA PACK

Press Release

This press release was sent to me and I felt compelled to immediately post it to the site even though it's not your usual outdoors product. It's probably one of the most valuable pieces of hunting gear any camp could have on hand, especially those of us who hunt or fish in remote areas. Hopefully a time will come when these are readily available on the shelves of every local hunting gear shop.-Jim

Z-MEDICA BEGINS MARKETING ITS NEW QUIKCLOT® TRAUMA PACK
Offers First Responders, Adventure Sports Enthusiasts, Motorists Same Ability as US Navy & Marines to Instantly Stop Serious Traumatic Bleeding

NEWINGTON, Conn.,- Police, firefighters, SWAT teams, outdoor sports enthusiasts and motorists around the nation are beginning to carry small nylon pouches that could one day save their lives – or someone else’s – in the event of a severe traumatic bleeding injury.

Z-Medica, LLC, the manufacturer of QuikClot®, the breakthrough blood-clotting product credited with saving numerous lives in Iraq, has begun marketing its new trauma pack. This product is a waterproof pouch of durable nylon containing QuikClot, a choice of one of two state-of-the-art pressure bandages and two packs of compressed gauze – everything required to stop even the most severe arterial bleeding on the spot. (www.z-medica.com)

The QuikClot Trauma Pack contains the same items for stopping severe bleeding as those included in the United States Marine Corps’ new Individual First Aid Kit (IFAK). The new pouch has been designed for nonmilitary users.

“QuikClot has been proven on the battlefield,” said Vice President Bart Gullong. “Our objective is to take what we’ve learned in the military arena and translate it into the most effective products to save lives in a variety of other situations where civilians are in harms way or far from medical care.” Packaging QuikClot with a pressure bandage and gauze makes it simple for users to comply with package directions, which call for first applying pressure and then blotting excess blood and any water from the wound area before administering QuikClot.

The QuikClot Trauma Pack includes a 3.5-ounce package of QuikClot, enough to stop severe arterial and/or venous bleeding; two packs of compressed gauze; and one compression bandage, a choice of either the Cinchtight™ bandage or the Emergency Bandage™.

Both compression bandages combine several features – one-handed application, the ability to apply direct pressure, a large absorbent pad, and a closure apparatus.

For ease of carrying and use, the trauma pack has been constructed to be compatible with almost any attachment system. It is constructed with a MOLLE backing. This unique webbing, originally designed to integrate into the gear the military carries, can also easily attach to a belt, backpack, or even an airplane carry-on bag.

The Hillsborough County (Florida) Sheriff’s Office (HCSO), serving the Tampa area, and one of the largest law enforcement organizations in the nation, was the first to fully deploy the trauma pack. HCSO has distributed QuikClot Trauma Packs to all of its deputies for inclusion in their first aid kits, and has placed them in all of its motor vehicles, marine units and facilities, including its jail and regional shooting range.

QuikClot is a granulated mineral substance that offers a dramatic new solution to stopping moderate to severe blood loss outside the surgical setting. Working at the molecular level, the highly porous QuikClot attracts and adsorbs the smaller water molecules, leaving the larger clotting factor and platelet molecules concentrated in the wound. This forms a powerful clot that stays in place until the patient can be moved to medical attention.

Because QuikClot is inert, it poses little or no risk of allergic reaction. It also poses no inherent risk of disease transmission, so that it is safe to leave in the wound until further medical care is available. In comparative testing by the United States Navy and Marine Corps, QuikClot was the only product that resulted in a 100% survival rate in a lethal wound model.

Launched in April 2002, Z-Medica, LLC, specializes in hemostatic solutions that save lives. Z-Medica’s sister company, On Site Gas Systems, also produces life-saving products for use in remote parts of the world, including a device that extracts high purity medical grade oxygen from ambient air.

QuikClot’s discoverer and Z-Medica president Frank Hursey has been named to the 2003 Scientific American 50 as “Defense Researcher of the Year”, the 2002 Popular Science Best of What’s New list, has won a Platinum Innovation Award for 2003 from the Connecticut Quality Improvement Award Partnership, Inc., and was named the Most Promising Technology Company of 2003 by the Connecticut Technology Council. Z-Medica has its headquarters at Budney Industrial Park, 35 Budney Road, Newington, Connecticut 06111. For more information, call 860-667-2201 or visit www.z-medica.com.
