Time Running Out to Enter N.H. Moose Lottery- New Hampshire

Hunting

Hunting- The clock is ticking for those who want to hunt moose in New Hampshire this fall -- the deadline for entering the 2005 moose hunt lottery is May 27, 2005. Hunters can enter the lottery online (click here to enter) or pick up an application from any license agent. There is a nonrefundable $10 application fee.

"There's no question that New Hampshire offers quality moose hunting opportunities," says Kristine Bontaites, Moose Project Leader for New Hampshire Fish and Game.

"Our success rates are high, 74% statewide last year, with 3.4 bulls taken per cow taken. Only 20% of those bulls were yearlings, while 27% were fully mature animals age 5.5 or older. Most of our permits are either-sex, allowing hunters the opportunity to bag a moose of their choice. In addition, with the exception of the southeast region, most of the state still provides large areas of undeveloped woodlands in which to hunt."

Lottery applications must be postmarked or submitted online by midnight, Friday, May 27, 2005, or delivered to Fish and Game headquarters on Hazen Drive in Concord prior to 4 p.m. EST that day. Winners will be selected through a random number draw on June 17, 2005. Permit-holders can choose another hunter of any age to accompany them on the hunt. One moose may be taken per permit.

Hunters can improve their chances in the lottery by applying every year. Under a bonus point system in place since 2004, applicants will have their name entered into the lottery one time for each consecutive year they apply. Once they are drawn, they lose all bonus points and cannot apply again for three years.

The 2005 New Hampshire moose hunting season will take place statewide October 15 to 23, with 525 permits being issued this year. Twenty of these permits will be for antlerless moose, and the remaining 505 will be for moose of either sex.

In 2004, the statewide success rate for the moose hunt was 74%, similar to the previous year's 75% success. A total of 388 moose were taken during the nine-day season last year: 287 bulls and 101 cows. Regional success rates were similar to previous years', with the exception of the Southeast region, which had its highest success rate (45%) since 1994. Hunters traveled from 21 different states and one Canadian province to participate in the 2004 hunt. New Hampshire residents took 313 moose, while non-residents took the remaining 75.

Each hunter may submit one permit application. Hunters do not have to hold a current hunting license to enter the lottery. Those who won moose permits in 2002, 2003 or 2004 are not eligible to enter this year's lottery. Applicants must be 16 years old by May 27, 2005.

Moose lottery application fees are used exclusively for implementing a comprehensive moose management program, including education, research, protection and management. New Hampshire's moose population is now estimated at 6,500 animals.
